“Dream big.”  “Go for the gold.” “Set a BHAG – Big Hairy Audacious Goal.”  These are the types of phrases you may have heard from motivational speakers and professional coaches.  Let’s face it, the goal setting process is valuable.  It helps you get clear about what you want and reminds you of where you are going.  But there’s a missing piece of the goal-setting puzzle, in my opinion.  And this one thing can mean the difference between achieving the goals you’ve set for yourself and those same goals becoming an impossible dream.

Take my client Frankie.  She’s a wonderful lady.  A dreamer – and a do-er.  By the time Frankie found her way to me she was in a place of financial struggle.  She was doing everything right, or so she thought.  I could tell in our first conversation that Frankie had fallen prey to the encouragement of the motivational masses on the topic of goal setting.  She had heeded the battle cry of setting her own “BHAG’s” and had grown very, very fond of them.

During one of our earliest conversations Frankie shared with me her favorite BHAG; the financial goal she had set for her business.  She intended to make $500,000 in 2010.  Like many people who have dipped their toe in the Law of Attraction pond by watching the mega-hit “The Secret,” Frankie had an elementary understanding of how the Universal Laws really work.

This became clear to me as we discussed the structure of her business.  You see, Frankie’s business model was not set up to pull in that kind of money.  She didn’t have the products and services created, or the marketing avenues.  But she did have her “BHAG” and her strong belief that she was open to the Universe bringing her this income.

Well, that’s all lovely.  I believe in the loving Universe bringing us things too – but I also know that I have to be a “vibrational match” in order for those good things to come into my experience.

I shared some resources with Frankie to help her better understand the Universal Laws that work in conjunction with the Law of Attraction.  And I also shared with her my theory of “Money Resonance.”  You see, when it comes to things in your business such as price or goal-setting, one must take great care to make sure that they are “resonant” with those numbers.  In other words, if you are making $12,000 a year and you set a BHAG of $700,000, it’s more than likely that you are not vibrationally resonating – or anywhere near resonating with that number.  You’re resonating with what you are experiencing.

Look, I know all of this talk about vibrational resonance might sound way out there.  It’s really not that complicated, but I get that they are not words you hear every day.  For those of you who have been drawn to the Law of Attraction idea, you owe it to yourself to get up to speed with these other concepts.  Failure to learn about this stuff is the reason most people struggle to make Law of Attraction work for them.

So here’s the thing guys – if you set a goal that you aren’t resonant with?  It’s going to create more dissonance within your energy.  Every time you look at that goal, you’re going to “energetically zap” yourself.  That might happen in the form of a conscious or subconscious thought like “Who am I kidding – I can’t achieve that.”  Or “I don’t really deserve to make 500,000 a year!”

Maybe you’ve been very attached to your goals like my client, Frankie.  When I first introduced the idea of being resonant with her goals, she was very resistant to it.  She had been long listening to those well-meaning motivational speakers out there.  My idea was a completely new one, like it might be for you.  But after some consideration and some honest dialogue, she was able to see for herself that her goals were doing more damage than good.

So how do you know if you’re not resonant with your goals?  Easy!  Just look at your progress.  How close are you to achieving them?  Are you on track?  If so, you’re resonant.  If not, well, you’re not.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t be.  Use this idea to have some honest dialogue with yourself about why you’re not resonant.  What are you believing about yourself that is impacting your ability to achieve those goals you hold dear?  Is there anything you need to energetically release in order to move forward?

And while you’re working on releasing that which is getting in your way, consider writing new goals that don’t undermine your success.

Jesse had a dream. A dream to become a professional life coach and positively impact the lives of others. So she went for coach training, set up her website, started finding friends on Facebook, started her ezine along with all of the other tasks associated with starting a new business.

But not much was happening in the way of revenue generation and she knew that she was going to have to do something – and fast! She only put enough money away for 6 months of living without income from her new venture. So she started looking around at options that would help her meet more people and generate potential clients.

One day a friend told her about a networking group that she could join that would help her meet new people, so Jesse attended as a guest and really liked it. When the organizers of the group presented her with the membership information, Jesse excitedly took it home and read through the entire packet. Her excitement turned to fear when she read the membership fee. The four hundred dollar a year fee was not in her budget. In fact, nothing much had been placed in her business start up budget at all. She had already blown through the money she thought she would need, spending it all on a website.

Jesse made a critical mistake that too many small business owners make by not having a clear picture of inevitable expenses that come along with running a successful small business. So here she was, faced with a big dilemma. She needed to make more money, but she was afraid to spend money by joining the networking group that could help her meet those potential clients she so needed. Uh oh.

Unfortunately, Jesse didn’t join the networking group because of her fear of making an investment in her business – and she’s not alone. This happens all over the world, every single day. So if you are struggling to spend money on your own business, it’s time to ask yourself some important questions.

1. What’s behind the fear? Is there a deeper issue at hand, such as a fear that the investment will be lost due to a firm lack of belief in your ability to be successful as a business owner? If this is the case, you must either let go of the beliefs that are holding you back – or you will surely be letting go of your business whether you intend to or not. These limiting beliefs are business bankruptors and you must get honest with yourself as to what they are and then make them a part of your past.

2. What’s the cost of not making the investment? Calculate a reasonable potential Return on Investment for the item you are thinking about and compare it to the “expense.” For example: if Jesse had enlisted 4 new clients as a result of joining this networking group, she would have made $12,000 – what an ROI for a mere $400 investment!

3. Spend some time looking at common business expenses and calculate a budget. Consider marketing as a primary area – especially if your business is in its infancy. And don’t forget to account for a professional coach. Having a strategic thinking partner, motivator and accountability person on your team is an invaluable investment in ensuring your future success.

So many people have so much on the line right now. They are desperately trying to avoid a return to Corporate America and trying to make their business work, but they are going about it without a realistic view of what it takes to succeed. If you are in this situation, I urge you to take an honest, hard look at what’s going on in your business – and if you have the beliefs to support your long-term success. If not, you must do something about it right away or else you could end up like Jesse, whose fear came true – she’s back working for someone else, struggling through each day and looking at her business with hindsight, wishing she had been more realistic about what all was involved in being successful.

How many of you saw the recent Star Trek movie?  Amazing, wasn’t it?  I’m not a huge Trekkie myself, but I really loved this particular version of the Star Trek story.  As my hubby walked out of the theatre I was practically skipping through the parking lot exclaiming how much I loved the movie, how well it was done and even how I thought the casting director should receive an award for doing such a great job!

Then, as we drove home, I started to think about what space really means to me.  This is one of those topics that kinda’ blows my mind (along with the time concept – don’t even get me started on that one).  I mean, what is space?  Does it ever end?  How could it?  How couldn’t it?  And then I started thinking about our loving Universe.  I always tend to equate these two – do you?

And as I pondered the concept of the Universe and allowed my mind to wander as I considered space, I had a feeling that “space” is something that I need more of.  Not in the sense of running away from others, trying to “have my space” but in the sense of creating pockets of time for things to show up in my life.

I don’t know about you but I tend to be pretty scheduled and on task.  It’s very rare for me to have “space” in my calendar just to be – or to allow things to unfold.  And it’s high time I changed that.  I guess the struggle for me is that I’m interested in so many things.  Outside of my professional and family responsibilities, I have tons of interests – from crafting to reading, studying to become a Religious Science Practitioner, playing tennis, the list just goes on and on.

So it’s really hard for me to not fill my time with the things I love.  But having had this space revelation, I decided to play with this whole notion and see what happened.  And wouldn’t you know, amazing things surfaced!

In creating “space” in my work calendar, I was able to sit quietly, taking some pre-2010 strategic planning contemplative time.  Another time, the phone rang and I was able to coach a friend through a difficult situation.  In my personal life, creating space has allowed me to walk around my yard, looking at nothing in particular, but yet taking in everything.  Each and every one of these experiences was rejuvenating for me and likely ones I would not have had, had I not created the space for them to show up.

So when can you create some space in your own calendar?  Challenge yourself to try this exercise for yourself, and see what shows up.  Maybe you’ll find rejuvenation too!
